Adoption is handled directly through Milton's Animal Control shelter, run by the Town, where the team gets to know each animal so they can help match them with the right home.

She can be nervous around other dogs, which comes from fear rather than aggression. We're working on this with supervised walks alongside her shelter buddy Ralphie, and recommend a good basic obedience or reactive dog class to continue that progress once she's adopted, we're happy to point you toward one.

Angus was found in mid-July with a horrific leg injury, emaciated and severely infected.
It was touch and go for a few days, but the team at Canton Veterinary Hospital stepped up and saved his life.

Angus is still mastering housebreaking, so does well on a set schedule throughout the day, and he's in that mischievous teenage stage.
Because he was so sick when he arrived, he hasn't yet been tested with other animals.
Having gone without, he still thinks food might not be available, so he'll eat anything edible, and non-edible, given the chance.
Angus needs a patient family willing to give him the chance to become the dog he was always meant to be.
We don't want anyone to adopt him out of pity, we want them to know there will be challenges along the way, but that sticking with him means being rewarded with real love and loyalty.

What to Expect
- Email the shelter to request an application for the animal you're interested in
- Your application is reviewed, and if approved, a meet-and-greet is scheduled
- Meet the animal in person at the shelter, by appointment
- A short conversation with the team about your home and lifestyle, so the match is right for both of you
Before you Adopt
Congratulations on wanting to give a stray, neglected, or unwanted animal a real second chance. Before you adopt, it's worth understanding what that commitment looks like:
- Pets are like babies: they cry, chew, get into things, and have accidents. You wouldn't give up on a child for that, so make sure you're ready to commit to your new family member the same way.
- Pets aren't disposable. They're not something to give up on once the novelty wears off.
- Make sure you have the time and space for a pet, and if you rent, your landlord's permission first.
- Adopting is a long-term commitment. Many dogs live to 15, and indoor cats well into their twenties.
- Shelter dogs are often not housebroken, having spent long hours in kennels, even previously trained dogs may need a refresher.
- Most shelter dogs haven't had formal training. That part's on you once they're home.
- Check that no one in your household has allergies before bringing your pet home.
- Animals are a big responsibility: feeding, grooming, vet care, exercise, and play, every day.
- Puppies grow up. That cute little puppy may become a large dog, so know the breed.
- The average adjustment period for a shelter animal is 3 to 6 months. Don't give up on them, they truly want to be part of your family, they just need you to show them how.
- Every shelter animal has been through something. They need love, attention, patience, and training to heal from it.
In return, you'll get unconditional love and companionship. Not a bad deal.
After You Adopt
Adopting is the beginning, not the end. MAL helps post-adoption support, behavioural resources, and the ongoing rehabilitation work that gets animals ready for a home in the first place.
